Moscow, May 25, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church has been playing a key role in strengthening the moral foundation in ties between different states, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the opening of the 14th World Russian People's Congress on Tuesday.
"Today, we are speaking about the need to reinforce the moral foundation of modern day international relations. Morality in relations between states is primarily expressed through obeying the law. President [Dmitry] Medvedev's initiative to sign a treaty [on European security] is aimed at resolving the lawfulness deficit problem from the point of view of ensuring the indivisibility of security in Europe," Lavrov said."We seek equal security for all states," he said.
The Russian Orthodox Church has been playing a major role in bolstering Russia's international position, the minister said.
"The Church has been tackling the same tasks, such as diplomacy, conducting peacekeeping missions on CIS soil and other regions of the world, as well as promoting genuine reconciliation between people," Lavrov said.
The Russian Orthodox Church is an "ally" of the Foreign Ministry, he noted."Last year's pastoral trip of His Holiness to Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Azerbaijan helped strengthen ties between our people and helped create conditions to continue expanding cooperation between the states," the minister said.
Lavrov said he was confident that the results of the 14th World Russian People's Congress would allow "Russia to continue strengthening its positions in European and global politics."
