“International laws and norms prohibit any violations of the integrity of this or that state,” he told a news conference and reminded that he had actively opposed “recognizing independence of Kosovo, which gave birth to the policy of double standards.”

Timoshenko criticizes first 100 days of President Yanukovich

KIEV, June 4 (Itar-Tass) -- Ex-premier and bloc leader Yulia Timoshenko gave a press conference on Friday in reply to President Viktor Yanukovich’s press conference.

The introductory speech, which lasted for about an hour, criticized the first 100 days of Yanukovich’s presidency as ‘a tragedy for Ukrainian democracy’ [White slavery is one of the few "accomplishments" of this "democracy" as well as Neo-Unia and Third World poverty on Russian territory. “In the 100 days [of his presidency] Viktor Yanukovich almost built an authoritarian model. This model will not serve the nation, and Ukraine is entering a new period, which will not be pleasant for citizens. Election promises of Yanukovich have not been kept,” she said.

Ukraine gets first ever chance to build nation without conflicts -- President

KIEV, June 3 (Itar-Tass) - For the first time in its newest history, Ukraine has gotten a chance to roll up its sleeves and start building a statehood for the people rather than the powers that be and to do it quietly and without conflicts, President Viktor Yanukovich said Thursday in an address to the nation.

He indicated that the law on internal and foreign policy, which the country's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada is going to adopt "will make our policies transparent and clear for everyone and will put an end to political instability."

Yanukovich recalled that the new parliamentary coalition, which formed the cabinet of ministers and the executive vertical of power, "has brought up the first encouraging tendencies in the economy."

""Over a brief period of time, Ukraine managed to stabilize relations with key partners -- the EU, the U.S. and Russia," he said.

Reinforced police cordons were placed around the Ukraina State Palace where he delivered his speech.

Numerous supporters of the Regions Party with flags in their hands stood on both sides of the palace.

Ukraine declares its non-bloc status - the draft law

KIEV, June 3 (Itar-Tass) - The Ukrainian parliament has adopted after first reading the draft law on the fundamentals of the domestic and foreign policy of the country, submitted by President Viktor Yanukovich. The resolution got 253 votes, while the minimal number was 226.

Presenting the draft law, Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov said that “Ukraine will be an understandable, predictable and responsible country both for its citizens and for the whole world. “The unambiguous confirmation of the non-bloc status of Ukraine is the key elements of the foreign policy forecasting and consistency, contained in the draft law,” Azarov said. He stressed that the president suggested the withdrawal from the agenda of the problem of Ukraine’s joining of NATO, which is splitting the nation and is distracting people from a search for effective ways of the development of Ukraine.

The opposition – Yulia Timoshenko Bloc and Our Ukraine-Popular Self-Defence – emphatically criticised the draft law, because it drops the idea of Ukraine’s membership in NATO, and urged to vote against it.

Pres signs law on access of foreign units to Ukraine for exercise

KIEV, June 3 (Itar-Tass) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich on Thursday signed a law on access of units of foreign armed forces to the territory of the country this year for participation in international exercises, the presidential press service reported. The law comes into effect on the day when it is published.

The parliament approved the president’s decision on May 18. Earlier, Defence Minister Mikhail Yezhel said Ukrainian military will take part this year in 21 international exercises both in Ukraine and outside it. “Nine exercises are to be held in Ukraine,” he said. The minister also said that over 600 Ukrainian military would take part in international exercises abroad.

In 2009, the parliament did not pass a bill on access of foreign military to the country. International manoeuvres were replaced with command-and-staff exercises without participation of military units.

Ukrainian opposition believes lightning strike at the Rada building is a sign from above

Kiev, June 3, Interfax – The Our Ukraine's MP Yury Klochkovsky said the lightning stroke at the building of the Supreme Rada was "a sign from above" for the Party of Regions.

"The fact that the lightnings stroke reached the Supreme Rada when it was considering the draft on principles of home and foreign policy is another sign for the Party of Regions as it strives to change Ukrainian legislation for satisfying its political needs," the MP said criticizing the a draft on All-Ukrainian referendum suggested by the Party of Regions.

As Ukrainian Pravda reported on Thursday referring to the Supreme Rada source, the lightning stroke resulted in failure of lightning and telephone systems, thus the light was partially switched off, the Rada system and phone network were disconnected for a few seconds.

In a few seconds, voltage stabilizers snapped into action and work of all systems was restored.

Ukraine security chief doesn't see Ukraine as a country with high Islamist hazard

Kiev, May 31, Interfax - Ukrainian Security Service head Valery Khoroshkovsky said the hazard of international terrorist organizations, including those of Islamist character, is not high at present.

"Unfortunately, not a single country is immune from this (threat - IF) and we are a part of the risk zone. At the same time, there is no high terrorist hazard in Ukraine," Khoroshkovsky stressed in an interview with Kommersant Ukraine issue.

According to him, the Ukrainian Security Service has a well-developed system of information gathering, which exposes terrorist act planning at early phases.

There is no ethnic component for terrorism in the Crimea either, Khoroshkovsky stressed.

"The Crimea has certain specifics, but they are unrelated to the Crimean Tatars. The specifics are related to the geography, as the peninsula has convenient places for secret meetings and camps. We have information about certain terrorist organizations, but they view Ukraine as a place for taking rest or preparing operations in other states rather than as a theater of operation," he said.

Kiev to continue cooperation with NATO, but no membership

KIEV, May 27 (Itar-Tass) - The question on Ukraine’s membership of NATO has been shelved now, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishchenko on Thursday at the ninth interdepartmental meeting on coordination of activities of bodies of executive power in foreign affairs.

“The idea of Ukraine’s membership of the alliance does not enjoy support of the majority of Ukrainians and is destructive for efficiency of the state’s foreign policy,” the minister explained.

He noted at the same time that Kiev would continue developing relations with NATO. “We jotted out from the agenda the question on a membership of the alliance. Precisely this approach is in full compliance with the present state of affairs,” Grishchenko emphasised.

He reckons at the same time that participation in international organisations is an urgent thing for Ukraine. “This gives a chance to use the best international experience and resources for the country’s development,” Grishchenko said.

On Wednesday, first deputy secretary of the Ukrainian Security Council Stepan Gavrish said by the results of a meeting of the joint working Ukraine-NATO group that the Ukrainian side “refrains from the ideology of speedy accession to military-political amalgamations”.

According to the deputy secretary, this stand “will help to concentrate attention and resources on carrying out large-scale social and economic reforms, necessary for the country, and to ensure stable development”. At the same time, “preserving the dynamics of the political dialogue with NATO, Ukraine started establishing strategic partnership with Russia,” Gavrish added.

The Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council had approved the strategy of the country’s relations with NATO in May 2002 whose final aim was to join the North Atlantic alliance. Starting from 1997, Ukraine and NATO have been cooperating in the framework of the signed charter on special partnership.

Catholic festivities not best occasion for Pope's visit to THE Ukraine - Moscow Patriarchate

Moscow, May 26, Interfax - The Moscow Patriarchate has made it understood that the possible visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Ukraine to mark 600th anniversary since the capital city of the Catholic metropolitans was transferred from Galich to Lvov, will not benefit relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Vatican.

"The celebration of the 600th anniversary since the residence of Galich Catholic metropolitans was moved to Lvov is not the best occasion for the Pontiff's visit to the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church," [Note: 600 years ago the Metropolia of Galich was RUSSIAN ORTHODOX and reliant upon the omophorion of the RUSSIAN ORTHODOX Metropolitan of Kiev who had transferred that cathedra to Moscow. Father Dimitry said, however, that the Moscow Patriarchate has not received such information from the Vatican so far.

"It would make sense to speak about the Moscow Patriarchate's position on Benedict XVI's visit to Ukraine only after this visit has been officially announced by the Vatican's press service," he said.

Ukrainians Hoping for '12 Papal Visit


KIEV, Ukraine, MAY 25, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The archbishop of Lviv [sic! L-V-O-V]says Benedict XVI has been invited to visit Ukraine in 2012, to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the change of the Church's headquarters from Galich to Lviv [sic! L-V-O-V].

Archbishop Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki announced today that the invitation has been made, clarifying that no official dates were set.

The archbishop -- who worked in the private secretariat of Pope John Paul II and then of Benedict XVI -- added that possible dates are to be analyzed so that the Holy See can give an official confirmation.

It would be the second papal visit to Ukraine after the nation's 1991 independence. John Paul II visited in 2001.

The visit would have particular importance in the context of ecumenical relations with the Orthodox Church, which is one of Benedict XVI's priorities.

Ukraine has a population of some 45 million, with about 80% of them belonging to branches of the Orthodox Church. About 10% of Ukrainians are either Greek or Roman Catholic.

"The Holy See has accepted this invitation... and now the specific date is to be defined," Archbishop said.

The previous Pope John Paul II visited Ukraine in 2001. It was the first papal visit to Ukraine during the years of its independence.

При этом земля не вздрогнула, и не рухнули небеса, а митинг у стен Верховной Рады Украины представителей объединенной парламентской оппозиции, участники которого держали в руках флаги с символикой блока Юлии Тимошенко, Всеукраинского объединения «Свобода» и партии «Родина» уже никак не походил на «оранжевое» безумие Майдана. Призывы к всеукраинской акции неповиновения призывами и остались.

Лидер объединенной парламентской оппозиции Юлия Тимошенко звала всех к стенам парламента, чтобы потребовать от власти отчета за свои действия, касающиеся подписания соглашения с Россией о продлении базирования Черноморского флота России в Севастополе. Но, похоже, Украина переболела подхваченным в США «воспалением Ющенко».

Любопытно, что происходящее все та же « Christian Science Monitor называет «ошеломляющим геополитическим пируэтом». Избранный в феврале на обещаниях восстановить разбитые отношения Украины с Россией, Янукович, по мнению американской газеты, «поступил более поспешно и решительно, чем кто-либо вообще мог ожидать. Он повернул внешнеполитические приоритеты Украины от прозападного курса своего предшественника Виктора Ющенко и в сторону быстрого сближения и экономической реинтеграции с Россией. Критики говорят, что даже если украинская прозападная оппозиция вернется к власти в ближайшие годы, она может оказаться неспособной разорвать цепи, которые Янукович кует с Москвой».

Насчет «цепей» – оставим на совести янки. Но происходящее в наших отношениях действительно, после мрака ющенковской русофобии, действительно впечатляет и пробуждает надежды.

Если оглянуться всего на считанные недели назад, то в марте новый президент Украины Виктор Янукович просто-напросто закрыл правительственную комиссию, которая готовила страну к вступлению в НАТО, тем самым убрав этот однозначно непопулярный для украинцев шаг из ближайшего будущего Украины. В апреле Ющенко встретился с нашим президентом Дмитрием Медведевым и подписал соглашение по продлению на 25 лет аренды Москвой украинского порта в Севастополе, где располагается Черноморский флот России. «В обмен Украина получит 30-процентную скидку на импортируемый российский газ», – ехидно замечает издание.

Но разве мы никогда прежде не ценили добро, доброго к себе отношения?

Зато, как мы писали, распаленные сделкой украинские депутаты-оппозиционеры кидались в парламенте яйцами и дымовухами, оставшись в ничтожном меньшинстве, поскольку недавно созданная сильная коалиция сторонников Януковича в 450-местном парламенте обеспечила ратификацию соглашения.

А если будут приняты предложения премьер-министра России Владимира Путина, сделанные недавно, то вновь объединятся в единое целое украинские и российские элементы военно-промышленной экономики, насильственно разъединенные после распада Советского Союза: ядерная отрасль, авиационная промышленность, сети энерготрубопроводов.

Понятно, что, видя, как плод их пятилетних трудов – наметившееся отторжение России и Украины в угоду западному капиталу – рассыпается в прах, украинская оппозиция и ее лидер Юлия Тимошенко заявляют, что происходящее есть «план Путина по ликвидации Украины». И когда Рада вернется с майских каникул, они поднимут шум в парламенте и на улицах. Они предостерегают о том, что хрупкая демократия Украины может повести экономику Украины по российскому пути, а Янукович создаст в Киеве авторитарный режим в путинском стиле.

«То, что делает Янукович, – говорит Ольга Боднар, депутат от блока Тимошенко, – идет вразрез с волей украинского народа; он действует так, словно он – президент одной части Украины, а не Украины целиком. Когда парламент снова откроется, вы увидите ответ оппозиции».

Нимало в этом ответе не сомневаемся. Как и в том, что сам народ Украины уже дал вполне точный и ясный ответ нынешним оппозиционерам. «Я думаю, что мы движемся к полноценному стратегическому союзу между Россией и Украиной, – считает Кирилл Фролов, эксперт по Украине в Институте стран Содружества. – Пять лет антироссийской пропаганды, очевидно, не оказали влияния на украинский народ, который явно видит свое будущее вместе с Россией. Это единственное объяснение тому, что у Януковича получается проводить такие крупные изменения так стремительно: он получает масштабную народную поддержку».

С радостью разделяю это мнение.

Оно ведь и естественно для наших народов, быть вместе. Мы слишком рядом, слишком по-семейному живем, чтобы попытки нас разделить, используя «внутрисемейные» проблемы и обиды, не отзывались болью. Вспомните – опросы общественного мнения постоянно показывали, что идея членства в НАТО никогда не была популярной среди украинцев, что Ющенко не получил приглашение вступить в эту организацию от западных лидеров только потому, что те, в отличие от самого бывшего президента, прекрасно понимали, что Ющенко то хочет вступить в НАТО, а Украина – нет.

И даже последний пример – Владимир Паниотто, глава киевского Международного Института Социологии утверждает, что более 60 процентов украинцев в недавних опросах общественного мнения не возражали против того, чтобы Российский флот оставался еще четверть века в Севастополе.

И теперь в европейских исследовательских центрах открыто говорят, что невелики шансы на то, что Виктор Янукович захочет пересмотреть свою программу по экономическому объединению, которая предусматривает таможенный союз с Россией и движение к единой валюте.

В Киеве говорят, что идея Владимира Путина о слиянии ядерных индустрий двух государств там очень приветствуется, потому что обеспечит такое необходимое российское содействие по завершению давно замершего строительства Хмельницкой АЭС, а также 25-летний контракт по поставке топлива на существующие украинские 4 АЭС по сильно сниженным ценам.

Наше предложение объединить авиационные отрасли поддержит находящийся в кризисе завод Антонова, производитель грузовых самолетов в советские времена. Он может быть возрожден посредством вливаний российского капитала и ноу-хау, говорят аналитики.

Не сделает Украину слабее и предложения о слиянии украинской газовой компании Нафтогаз с кремлевским гигантом Газпром. Понятное дело, оппозиция говорит, что схема на самом деле предполагает захват украинской компании, которая, вместе с прибыльной сетью трубопроводов, через которые проходит 80 процентов экспорта российского газа в Европу, по величине едва достигает одной десятой Газпрома. «Предложение было неожиданным, и совершенно не факт, что мы его примем, – считает Янукович. – Мы заинтересованы в строительстве газового транзита, однако наш приоритет – защита интересов Украины». Но защита интересов нашего соседа это и наша стратегия.

А пока у здания Верховной рады сегодня собираются сторонники и противники президента страны. Колонны людей идут к парламенту, вокруг которого плотным кольцом выставлены синие палатки Партии регионов. Оппозиция группируется на противоположной стороне улицы Грушевского. Оппозиция собирается заслушать информацию правительства о соглашениях, которые планирует подписать вскоре в Киеве президент Украины и России, заявила экс-премьер Юлия Тимошенко. В противном случае, сказала она, будет подготовлена масштабная акция протеста во время визита российского президента Дмитрия Медведева. Правительство перед оппозицией отчитываться не намерено и, согласно букве закона, не обязано. Семь руководителей и представителей парламентских партий, в частности, Народного Руха Украины, партии «Батькивщина», Европейской партии Украины, Украинской социал-демократической партии, Партии защитников Отечества, партии «Реформы и Порядок», «Народной самообороны» подписали учредительный акт о создании Комитета защиты Украины для координации совместных действий в отстаивании национальных интересов страны. Из внепарламентских партий их поддержали всеукраинское объединение «Свобода» и Украинская партия.

Надо отнестись к этому с пониманием, ведь даже от простуды народ лечится не один день…

Sergei Markov, a Russian MP and a member of the PACE Political Committee said on Monday that the issue had been put on the Council’s daily monitoring list. “This means that for Kiev this is no longer a matter of goodwill only,” Markov added. Former President Viktor Yushchenko earlier bestowed the Hero of Ukraine titles to the nationalist leaders Roman Shukhevich and Stepan Bandera who collaborated with the German Nazis during WWII.

Timoshenko demands extraordinary parliament session over deal with Russia

KIEV, April 22 (Itar-Tass) -- Ukrainian opposition leader Ukrainian Yulia Timoshenko said she was demand an extraordinary parliament session on Saturday over Wednesday’s agreement between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia that allow the Russian Black Sea Fleet to stay in the Crimea till 2042.

Timoshenko said Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich “grossly violated the Constitution by signing the agreement with the Russian Federation on the extension of the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s presence in Ukraine.”

"Yanukovich flouted Article 17of the Constitution which does not allow the presence of foreign military bases in Ukraine,” she said.

Timoshenko believes that by so doing Yanukovich who “has unfairly taken the post of president” continues to sell Ukrainian national interests.

However, a senior Ukrainian diplomat disagreed with Timoshenko said that the agreement does not contradict the Constitution.

Ukraine’s President Victor Yanukovich is expected to abolish a decree passed by his predecessor to bestow the title of Hero of Ukraine on the wartime collaborator with the Nazis Stepan Bandera. A source in the presidential administration has told Reuters that the relevant decision will be released by the 65th anniversary of the Allied Victory in the Second World War which Kiev will be celebrating together with Moscow on May 9th. Stepan Bandera was the leader of Ukrainian Nationalists from 1941 to 1959. The decree by the former President Viktor Yushchenko to make him Hero of Ukraine received little support at home and triggered severe condemnation from Poland and Russia. The Israeli Simon Wiesenthal Center has described it as revolting. And the European Parliament has urged the new president to cancel it.

Kiev, March 11, Interfax – The Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc used cult methods of work at the last presidential elections, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church press service Vasily Anisimov believes.

"Even Tymoshenko's manners remind of Maria Davy Christos, she's nice looking, and she doesn't blink when speaking and speaks on the melt of breakdown as being unable to stop. She doesn’t defend her opinion, but rather attacks opponents, always accuses, gives insulting characteristics, accelerates fears," Anisimov said in his interview to the Radonezh radio.

According to him, Tymoshenko's election campaign as well as her Bloc's work had a significant element of "exalted messiahnism."

"The Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc adopted symbols of the White Fraternity, all members dressed in white, I even saw at the parliament that the whole fraction wore white shirts," Anisimov said.

"Besides, she as a true Orthodox Christian started her pilgrimage to Jerusalem shrines from the prayer at the Western Wall," head of the church press service said.

Kiev, March 11, Interfax - Striving of former Ukrainian President's officials to interfere in religious situation often turned against them.

Thus, once was a case connected with similar names of the so-called Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church leader Mefody Kudryakov and a renowned metropolitan of the Moscow Patriarchate.

"Once, they (Viktor Yuschenko's officials - IF) published a keynote for Ukrainian Autocephalous Church article under his name, but illustrated it with a photograph of Metropolitan Mefody of Astana and Alma-Aty. Mefody is always Mefody, even in Kazakhstan, what of it," spokesman of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Vasily Anisimov said in his interview to the Radonezh radio station as cited at the UOC website.

According to him, "UAOC didn't protest, what the sense of arguing with the authorities. Any toy is OK that keeps it away."

Anisimov also noted it was "presidential consolidators" who initiated request of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church to the Constantinople Patriarch to accept it into its jurisdiction.

Председатель Всемирного Совета Подкарпатских русинов Василий Джуган, уполномоченный Европейского Национального Конгресса Подкарпатских русинов Василий Микулин, русинский писатель Иван Петровций и другие лидеры русинского движения (всего 200 подписей) от имени русинской общественности обратились к новым властям Украины, властям ЕС, США и России в поддержку протоиерея Димитрия Сидора, преследуемого Службой безопасности Украины (СБУ), сообщает Седмица.Ru.

Общественность Закарпатья уверена, что преследование отца Димитрия Сидора сотрудниками Службы безопасности Украины (СБУ) подтверждает факт дискриминации русинов в современной Украине.

«Сегодня Виктор Янукович стал главой государства, а проиграли выборы заказчики политического дела против русинов и против священника Димитрия Сидора - галичане, крайние националисты, и реанимировавший в государстве фашизм В. Ющенко», - говорится в заявлении русинских лидеров.

Кардинал УГКЦ Любомир Гузар намерен обратиться к новому президенту Украины с призывом соблюдать Конституцию. Об этом он заявил 9 марта в Одессе, отвечая на вопрос о том, возрастет ли в Украине влияние УПЦ МП в связи с приходом нового президента – Виктора Януковича, сообщает "Религия в Украине".

"Мы теперь будем специально обращаться к новому президенту Украины, чтобы он точно придерживался Конституции. А Конституция говорит, что перед ней все религиозные организации, все Церкви, равны и имеют такие же самые права", - отметил Любомир Гузар.

По его словам, "это важно для мира, для единства внутри нашей державы".

"Это очень и очень важно. Чтобы не началась внутренняя суматоха, когда один "равнее" другого и не все равны перед Конституцией", - заявил кардинал Гузар.

"Мы с этим обратимся к господину президенту", - добавил он.

Молитвенное стояние черниговской православной общины у стен отнятого у нее храма Святой Екатерины рискует перерасти в прямое столкновение с представителями властей, которые 9 марта по решению Верховного суда Украины должны снести походный храм, выстроенный прихожанами в знак протеста.

"Я готов стоять на защиту походной церкви до конца", - заявил священник Александр Ледовой, духовник общины и настоятель храма, возглавляющий стояние.
По словам священника, стояльцы остались в одиночестве, но это не заставит их уйти.

"Мы стоим за Московский патриархат, за каноническое православие. Мы хотим, чтобы эта святыня не осквернилась, чтобы те предки, которые погибли за православие в крепости Азов, спокойно почивали в Царствии Небесном, чтобы не было стыдно за нас, их потомков", - говорил ранее отец Александр.

Епархиальные власти также не отказываются от идеи возврата Свято-Екатерининского храма. Однако их действия ограничены решением Верховного суда Украины от 16 февраля, который удовлетворил иск казацкой общины самозваного "Киевского патриархата" против Черниговского епархиального управления УПЦ и отца Александра. Данное решение обжалованию не подлежит.

Еще до его вынесения Московский патриархат в лице председателя синодального Отела по взаимоотношениям Церкви и общества отца Всеволода Чаплина просил правительство Юлии Тимошенко "с пониманием подойти к обеспечению безопасности и прав участников мирного молитвенного стояния и принять возможные меры для возвращения храма его историческому пользователю". Ответа на обращение получено не было.

Храм Святой Екатерины был построен в честь победы русской армии под Азовом в 1696 году и в настоящее время является памятником архитектуры в стиле украинского барокко.
Распоряжением от 5 апреля 2006 года глава Черниговской областной государственной администрации Николай Лаврик передал храм Святой Екатерины в пользование "Киевскому патриархату".
В знак протеста против этого решения верующие Украинской православной церкви организовали мирное молитвенное стояние у стен храма. Их усилиями были поставлены палатки и походная церковь Святой Екатерины, в которой регулярно совершаются богослужения.
Сторонники "Киевского патриархата" неоднократно пытались уничтожить походный храм с применением физической силы. В ходе одного из нападений были сожжены походный храм и святыни, находившиеся в нем. Прихожане установили новый походный храм, и в нем продолжали совершаться богослужения.

После этого представителями "Киевского патриархата" было инициировано судебное разбирательство относительно законности размещения палаток у храма. Деснянский районный суд Чернигова принял, а апелляционный суд Черниговской области оставил в силе решение убрать походный храм.
