Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus. Outside the Church there is no salvation, because salvation is the Church. For salvation is the revelation of the way for everyone who believes in Christ's name. This revelation is to be found only in the Church. In the Church, as in the Body of Christ, in its theanthropic organism, the mystery of incarnation, the mystery of the "two natures," indissolubly united, is continually accomplished. -Fr. Georges Florovsky

§ 20. For our faith, brethren, is not of men nor by man, but by revelation of Jesus Christ, which the divine Apostles preached, the holy Ecumenical Councils confirmed, the greatest and wisest teachers of the world handed down in succession, and the shed blood of the holy martyrs ratified. Let us hold fast to the confession which we have received unadulterated from such men, turning away from every novelty as a suggestion of the devil. He that accepts a novelty reproaches with deficiency the preached Orthodox Faith. But that Faith has long ago been sealed in completeness, not to admit of diminution or increase, or any change whatever; and he who dares to do, or advise, or think of such a thing has already denied the faith of Christ, has already of his own accord been struck with an eternal anathema, for blaspheming the Holy Ghost as not having spoken fully in the Scriptures and through the Ecumenical Councils. This fearful anathema, brethren and sons beloved in Christ, we do not pronounce today, but our Savior first pronounced it (Matt. xii. 32): Whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. St. Paul pronounced the same anathema (Gal. i. 6): I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ, unto another Gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the Gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you, than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. This same anathema the Seven Ecumenical Councils and the whole choir of God-serving fathers pronounced. All, therefore, innovating, either by heresy or schism, have voluntarily clothed themselves, according to the Psalm (cix. 18), ("with a curse as with a garment,") whether they be Popes, or Patriarchs, or Clergy, or Laity; nay, if any one, though an angel from heaven, preach any other Gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Thus our wise fathers, obedient to the soul-saving words of St. Paul, were established firm and steadfast in the faith handed down unbrokenly to them, and preserved it unchanged and uncontaminate in the midst of so many heresies, and have delivered it to us pure and undefiled, as it came pure from the mouth of the first servants of the Word. Let us, too, thus wise, transmit it, pure as we have received it, to coming generations, altering nothing, that they may be, as we are, full of confidence, and with nothing to be ashamed of when speaking of the faith of their forefathers. - Encyclical of the Holy Eastern Patriarchs of 1848

President Medvedev: World War II united us, and now we fear no one

“The Great Patriotic War forged the Russian national character, and Victory Day rallies the people to achieve great results,” said President Dmitry Medvedev. "It really was a terrible ordeal for our people. But this war has forged our national character, and now we are not afraid of anyone. We are able to overcome the most serious challenges. We are strong, we are successful," "Interfax" quotes President Dmity Medvedev, who was speaking in Moscow at the gala opening concert on the Victory Day. The President expressed confidence that this unique festival will unite the Russian people even more "to achieve the great results, the country faces." The President recalled that almost 27 million people in WWII were killed defending their homeland, Russia. "But these sacrifices were not in vain, because today we can see how people get together and remember those events of the past. We all owe our veterans, if not for their very terrible plight, we simply would not be. Let us say thanks to them." said President Medvedev, inviting the audience to enjoy the concert.

Moscow sky painted by spectacular fireworks

Spectacular fireworks displays ended the celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The jubilee fireworks lasted one and a half times longer than usual for May 9th a total of 15 minutes. During that time the Russian military launched more than 4,500 fireworks into the sky. The highlight of the fireworks show was the latest pyrotechnic called the "Tricolor", developed by Russian specialists, Interfax reported. To launch the volleys of fireworks the legendary ZIS-3 76 caliber gun was used. During the war, these guns were mounted on tanks and for firing from the fixed positions. They have a range of 13 kilometers.

Russia celebrates the 65th anniversary of Victory over Fascism

Russia’s main holiday - Victory Day – is being celebrated by the people of Russia. 65 years ago the human hands of Soviet soldiers, supported by the Western allies crushed fascism. According to the Defense Ministry, the total Soviet losses amounted to 26,6 million, of which two-thirds were part of the civilian population. It is more than half of human losses in World War II, including both `Germany and its satellites, and all countries who fought against Nazism. The center for celebrations is the capital of Russia, Moscow. On Red Square the all-Russian military parade will start. Parades will be held simultaneously in 72 cities of Russia, and Sevastopol, where the main base of the Black Sea Fleet is located. Participating in the parade will be about 102 thousand soldiers. Mounted in the squares of these cities will be special monitors which show broadcasts of the parade in Moscow in real time. The military parade on Red Square will for the first time see the participation of units from members of anti-Hitler coalition, the United States, Britain and France, as well as the Polish Army. Plus there will be parade companies from the CIS countries. On Red Square there will be more than fifteen hundred combat vehicles, missile and artillery units, and 127 planes and helicopters will fly over the Kremlin.

Drummers and flag-bearers marched through Red Square in Moscow at 10:00 a.m. as the 65th Victory Parade began. There were followed by troops dressed in World War II military uniforms. Marching alongside Russian soldiers were troops from other countries of the anti-Hitler coalition - the United States, Britain, France and Poland, and troop units from post-Soviet republics. The legendary Soviet T-34 tank opened the mechanized part of the parade and then modern weaponry was rolled out, including the latest Topol-M heavy ballistic missile launchers. President Dmitry Medvedev and the leaders of more than 20 countries were overseeing the parade. Simultaneous Victory parades took place in all Cities of Military Glory across Russia.

Had Soviet Army not routed Nazis, Europe would have been different – Medvedev

If the Soviet Army had failed to rout Nazism, Europe would have been different today, says the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in an interview with the Moscow-based daily Izvestia in the run-up to the 65th Victory Day. According to him, the world must know the truth about the Second World War. The war events are both reflected by the Nuremberg Trial materials and remembered by the people. Therefore the recently made attempts to rehabilitate Nazi criminals are premeditated malice. The main lesson taught by the Second World War is the need to unite in the face of an aggressor. Attempts to appease the aggressor are invariably doomed, Medvedev said. He called for setting up a new system of European security. The drawbacks of the current security system were shown in bold relief by the dramatic events in the Caucasus in August 2008. The world leaders of the 1930s also realized the need for a reliable security system, but failed to pluck up courage to make the required decisions, the Russian President said.

Patriarch leads memorial service on Battlefield of Prokhorovka

PROKHOROVKA (Belgorod region), May 3 (Itar-Tass) -- The celebrations on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory were held on the Battlefield of Prokhorovka, where the most large-scale tank battle in the war history broke out in 1943. Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev, chairman of the Russian Union of Writers Valery Ganichev, senators from the Federation Council and veterans of the Great Patriotic War were attending the celebrations. About 3,000 people gathered at the Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul, which had been built by the 50th anniversary of the Great Victory in 1995.

Patriarch Kirill led a memorial service for the heroes, who fell in a bloody tank battle. “The more time passes after that horrible war, the more precious the life is in our society of war veterans, who are the keepers of the living historical memory, heroes of the spirit, who defeated the enemy,” the patriarch said. “The feat committed by the army and the wartime generation is a precious treasury of our national history, a great example for future generations,” he noted.

“If we want to curb disorder and to ensure the prosperous development in peace of our Fatherland, we should have a strong spirit,” the supreme hierarch said. He also noted that “the sense of duty is a moral term.” “No laws, even harsh laws of the wartimes guaranteed the fulfillment of the duty. Here on this third battlefield of Russia we believe that the God can preserve our people, build up our moral foundations and help to fulfill our duty with all heart and soul,” the patriarch pointed out.

After the memorial service the war veterans were awarded with the Victory anniversary medals. Patriarch Kirill attended an unveiling ceremony of a new memorial entitled “The Third Battlefield of Russia.” The Battle of Prokhorovka along with the Battle of Kulikovo against the Tatar-Mongol yoke and the Battle of Borodino against the Napoleon French invasion are among the historic events, which show the valour of the Russian people.

More than 1,200 tanks participated in the Battle of Prokhorovka in the southern part of the Kursk Arch. The Nazi forces engaged in the battle new tanks Tiger and Panther and intended to take revenge for the defeat in the Battles for Moscow and Stalingrad. The attack of the Nazi troops was rebuffed in a bloody battle. Belgorod and Oryol were liberated less than a month later. The first artillery salute in honour of this victory was fired in Moscow.

Before the celebrations on the Battlefield of Prokhorovka His Holiness Kirill consecrated the largest church in Belgorod. The Church of Faith, Hope, Charity and their Mother Sophia with 17 domes on an area totaling about 3,000 square meters was built in the Belgorod residential area Kharkovskaya Gora. This place is just 70 kilometers away from the Russian state border with Ukraine. It is noteworthy that the major street of this Russian city is named after Ukrainian national hero Bogdan Khmelnitsky.

The new church became the 23rd church in Belgorod with the population of 400,000 people. All these churches have been built for the last 15 years. Only two olden houses preserved in the ancient Russian city of Belgorod, which was almost completely destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. Several thousand Belgorod residents attended the festive event on this sunny May day. Glossy Black Chokeberry already started blossoming at the church gates. An Orthodox Christian educational center is situated near the church. Students of the Belgorod ecclesiastical seminary work there as missionaries.

All top officials of the city and the region were attending the church consecration ceremony and the Divine Liturgy led by Patriarch Kirill. In a congratulatory message on the consecration of the new church His Holiness Kirill emphasized that “churches are being built for people to feel the abundant life, joy and calmness.” “The Kingdom of God can be reached not only through the overcoming of ordeals, but when there is peace in the heart and the mind is calm,” he said. The patriarch awarded Governor of the Belgorod Region Yevgeny Savchenko and several church donors with church medals.

Eternal Flame lit up on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow

MOSCOW, April 30 (Itar-Tass) -- The Eternal Flame was lit up in commemoration of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War on the Poklonnaya Hill in the Russian capital on Friday.

War veteran Ivan Slukhai, Hero of Russia Col. Alexander Borisevich and an activist from the children’s patriotic naval club “Severomorets” Alexander Aniskin lit up a torch from the Eternal Flame at the Kremlin Wall in the Alexandrovsky Garden for the Flame of Memory and Glory on the Poklonnaya Hill. Then they brought the torch to an armoured personnel carrier, which delivered the Eternal Flame to the Poklonnaya Hill under the escort of motorcyclists. On the Poklonnaya Hill the torch has already been passed to a warrior in the Battle for Moscow Vladimir Dolgikh, Hero of Russia Col. Vyacheslav Sivko and a member of the Moscow children’s public organization “Commonwealth” Nikolai Zimagorov. They were honoured to light up the Flame of Memory and Glory at the same place on the Poklonnaya Hill, where the Eternal Fire from the Alexandrovsky Garden had been removed for the period of the overhaul of the Memorial at the Unknown Soldier Tomb.

War veterans, many of whom could not resist tears, were attending a solemn ceremony. The Guard of Honour was placed at the Flame of Memory and Glory at the end of the ceremony. The best cadets of Moscow military academies were put on duty at the post of the Flame of Memory and Glory.

The Flame of Memory and Glory on the Poklonnaya Hill will be one more Moscow symbol in commemoration of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War in addition to the Eternal Flame on the Unknown Soldier Tomb in the Alexandrovsky Garden. On holidays and memorial dates “children’s post number one will be put on duty at the Flame of Memory and Glory from members of the children’s patriotic organizations, cadets and students.”

One more Eternal Flame was planned to light up at the Preobrazhenskoye cemetery. Over 10,000 Red Army warriors and commanders, who died at the Moscow hospitals during the Great Patriotic War and in the post-war period, were buried at the cemetery. The Eternal Flame on the Preobrazhenskoye cemetery, which was lit up from the Eternal Flame on the Field of Mars in Leningrad in 1956, was the first Eternal Flame torched in Moscow. “The ceremony was postponed and will be held within the next three days,” a source in the Moscow Mayor’s Office told Itar-Tass on Friday. The source did not say about the reasons for the ceremony postponement.

The Eternal Flame in the Alexandrovsky Garden was lit up on May 8, 1967. From December 27, 2009, through February 23, 2010, the Eternal Flame was temporarily removed to the Poklonnaya Hill. The removal was caused by the overhaul at the Unknown Soldier Tomb memorial.

The oldest Eternal Flame is considered the flame at the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier in the Arch of Triumph in Paris. This Eternal Flame was lit up in 1921 in commemoration of fallen servicemen in the First World War.
