The Orthodox Christians are celebrating Pentecost, one of the prominent feasts in the Christian liturgical year commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Christ. According to a longtime tradition, on this day floors in Russian churches are decorated with freshly-cut grass, and the icons are ornamented with birch branches. The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill and the Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople are expected to serve the Divine Liturgy at the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius outside Moscow.

Orthodox believers celebrate Trinity Sunday
About 3,000 Orthodox believers attended the divine service in the Assumption cathedral of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius on the occasion of Trinity Sunday. They were blessed by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. In his speech Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople stressed the greatness of St. Sergius, the founder of this spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church and the important role of Constantinople patriarchs for the life of the monastery.
The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow.
