*** Sites of religious designation should be used only in liturgical purposes, head of the Rosokhrankultura believes
Moscow, April 30, Interfax – The Rosokhrankultura head Alexander Kibovsky said that only a quarter of all churches in Russian regions are used for its intended purpose: for prayer and parochial life.
"Three fourths of (religious – IF) objects are not used in religious life," Kibovsky said on air Radonezh and Voice of Russia joint radio program.
According to the Rosokhrankultura head, the mentioned three fourths are mainly "subjects of our joint care and pain: village churches," often located in villages that do not exist as administrative units, "devastated hermitages, abandoned and demolished monasteries."
"Neither state nor local communities have funds to restore these monasteries. No one will take care of them except selfless religious organizations," Kibovsky said.
Kibovsky also noted that Russian legislation "absolutely precisely" defined how religious sites can be used.
"These sites should be used only in religious purposes. Except those special cases when it's not possible to use them on purpose, when the Church or other religious organization don't have an ability to use it or when this site should be turned into museum in order to be preserved," he said.
