Moscow, April 30, Interfax – The Russian Orthodox Church notes that some museum directors, who protest against moving collections from churches, in fact protect their personal commercial interests.
"There're cases when some museum directors are trying to rebel (against returning museum premises to the Church – IF) as they're afraid of losing a chance to give profitable parties in museum halls, which in fact are monasteries," head of the Department for Church and Society Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin said on air Radonezh and Voice of Russia joint radio program.
He pointed out to the recent fire in towers of the Pskov Kremlin as its premises were rented by a restaurant, to "a party with photo models and cocktails" organized by an automobile concern in St. Petersburg Smolny Cathedral and reminded there's a restaurant in Moscow located in "a building that historically belonged to a monastery."
"Some museums have "churned it out" and give cocktails, presentations and commercial concerts every day," the priest said.
According to him, it is necessary "to seriously consider the situation" as sometimes "there're grounds to doubt unselfishness and culture of some museum heads who spare no effort not to let museums move from church premises to more adopted but less prestige and popular ones."
