Patriarch is alarmed that Russia ceases to be a reading state
Moscow, March 10, Interfax - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia expressed his concern with the reduced interest in book reading of the most of Russians.
"Reading ceases to be our national tradition. We are no longer a reading nation," Patriarch said Wednesday at the opening of the 13th exhibition Books of Russia at the All-Russia Exhibition Center.
In this regard, he referred to the Russian Public Opinion Research Center data according to which the share of Russians who read books on a daily basis has reduced by 10%.
According to Patriarch, the Church's goal includes "developing a taste to quality books with people." Patriarch noted that "spiritual and moral attitudes are best understood through literary and artistic images."
"In every possible way, we should encourage reading and form readers' tastes," Patriarch Kirill believes.
